Tacitus, Cornelius (Trans. By Richard Greenwey and Henry Savile) The Annales of Cornelius Tacitus, with a Description of Germanie, & The End of Nero and the Beginning of Galba: Foure Books of the Histories of Cornelius Tacitus; The Life of Agricola London: John Bill 1622 Full-Leather Two volumes. Bound in full early leather, with gold stamping to the spines and edges of the boards; the endpapers are marbled, as is the text block of Savile's volume. Savile's End of Nero is the stated Fifth Edition, dated 1622; Greenway's Annales is lacking the title page but is in an identical format to Savile's and is presumed to be contemporary. These are the first English translations of Tacitus' Histories, and are magnificent for their first-hand accounts of the "Burning of Rome", not to mention his recounting of the trial of Christ by Pontius Pilate from the perspective of a non-Christian Roman. He also dispassionately deals with, among many other items of significance, a Roman Bacchanalian orgy. The Annales volume by Greenwey is, as stated, lacking the title page, and the front board is detached; it is in all other respects solid, and some minor spotting aside, a clean copy. Savile's volume, though perhaps lacking a flyleaf, is otherwise fully intact and in remarkable condition for a book of this vintage. A scarce set of great importance. Price:
